Complete Guide for Pakistani Student in Tokyo Japan

Tokyo is known for having some of the highest costs of living in the world, and the cost of living in Tokyo as a student can seem very expensive. But actually, it’s perfectly possible to live in Tokyo while studying full-time, as long as you’re prepared.

Numbers of Pakistani Male and Female students are studying in Japan on Fully funded Japanese Govt Scholarship and many are studying on a self basis. These scholarships are announced annually for Undergraduates, Graduate, M.Phill and Ph.D. students.

More than 191 different Scholarships are announced annually for Pakistani Students in Japan.

Read this article to understand the cost of living in Tokyo as a student, we are writing this article on behalf of one of our close buddy studying in Tokyo Japan.

We break down expenses into different categories, based on what students typically spend money on. Please note that the expenses in this article are based on the experience of a single student. The cost of living will vary from person to person and will largely depend on lifestyle and where you live in Tokyo.

Japan Scholarship

We divided the Cost of Living in Tokyo as a Student expense into the following categories.

  1. Enrollment
  2. Accommodation
  3. Transport
  4. Food
  5. Food, Drinks and Going Out
  6. Other Expenses

Enrollment

Our friend has been studying in Tokyo for just under two years, and her school costs 460,000 yen every six months. Textbooks are included, so the additional expense is minimal and consists of buying pens and notebooks, which cost a couple of hundred yen each time.

Accommodation

He lives in an apartment that is about a 10-minute walk from the nearest train station, and two minutes from the nearest supermarket. The Tokyo area you live in is suburban and popular with families. It has good transport links to famous areas such as Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shibuya.

On average, your expenses per month are:

  • Rent – 56,000 yen
  • Water – 2500 yen
  • Light – 2000 yen
  • Gas – 1500 yen
  • Internet – 3500 yen

His total expenses are around 65,500 yen per month.

For context, it is normal for prices to rent a flat start from around 100,000 yen a month for the most popular areas of Tokyo. Rent will decrease the further you live from central Tokyo and the train stations.

Shared houses are a good option for students who want to save a little money on rent. Prices and quality of rooms can vary widely, but it is normal to pay between 50,000 and 90,000 yen a month for a room in a shared house in Tokyo.

Transport

He spends about 12,000 yen a month on transportation. This mainly consists of going to and from school and work, plus a couple of trains on the weekends when you leave.

Tip-

A good tip for students to save some money on train fares is to buy a monthly pass.

Food

On a weekly basis, my friend spends around 5,000 yen a week on groceries. Some of the items you buy regularly include:

  • Soy milk – 160 yen
  • Eggs (pack of 10) – 250 yen
  • Lettuce – 100 yen
  • Avocado – 100-200 yen
  • Rice (2kg bag) – 1000 yen
  • Coffee (filter, pack of 10) – 300 yen
  • Tomatoes – 250 yen per two large tomatoes
  • Bananas (pack of 4) – 100 yen
  • Cereals (700 grams) – 550 yen

Food, Drink and Going Out

In addition to the weekly shopping, there are also times he eats out or orders take out:

  1. Breakfast – Lawson’s coffee and onigiri, 450 yen
  2. Lunch – supermarket salad and a tea, 500 yen

He also spends around 300 yen a day on snacks like chocolate, energy bars, or fruit.

Under normal circumstances, he goes to bars, izakayas, and/or restaurants two or three times a week, spending around 6000 yen a week.

There may also be expenses that include a bowl of ramen for 800 yen and a standard alcoholic drink for 500 yen. If you go out for brunch, you pay around 2000 yen, a sushi lunch can cost between 900 and 2000 yen and a coffee around 500 yen.

Other Expenses

He has other additional monthly expenses, including:

  1. Medical insurance ( mandatory for all long-term residents of Japan): 1600 yen
  2. Mobile bill: 4500 yen
  3. Shopping: 25,000 yen

Income

In total, his monthly income is around 150,000 yen, which includes financial aid for students given by the Swedish government. Before coming to Japan, he also worked and saved to help pay her tuition fees.
